Get Ready to Stand Down
to Prevent Falls in Construction

What will you do this year to prevent falls on your job sites? The National Campaign to Prevent Falls in Construction and , now in its sixth year, were launched by Â鶹ÊÓƵ, OSHA, and NIOSH to focus the industry's attention on eliminating fall hazards.

Progress is being made. Participants in past Stand-Downs report that they have benefited from access to new training resources and seen improved fall prevention activities on their jobsites. The most recent  data showed fewer fatalities from falls to a lower level in 2017. Unfortunately, falls continue to be the number one cause of construction workplace fatalities, claiming the lives of hundreds of construction workers each year.

You can participate in the May 6th - 10th Stand-Down by pausing work to train workers, conduct safety audits, hold equipment demonstrations, and engage in other activities to promote fall hazard awareness and prevention.

New Video Showcases Safe Ladder Practices & the NIOSH Ladder App
Our Roofing r2p Partnership (National Roofing Contractors Association and the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers) developed a new short that walks you through safe ladder practices and how to use the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's free ladder safety app. While developed with the roofing industry in mind, the lessons and tips in this video can benefit anyone who uses a ladder. Take a few minutes to watch the video and learn about safe ladder practices.

New Findings on Contractor Use of Safety Best Practices
A new report from Â鶹ÊÓƵ and Dodge Data & Analytics, "Contractor Use of Best Safety Practices," summarizes the results of two recent surveys that explored topics such as how frequently contractors engage in selected safety practices, differences between large, small and medium sized contractors, and use of Lean construction.  In the case of Lean construction, the report found that familiarity with the concept has grown considerably.  In 2013, when contractors were first surveyed about this concept only 52% said they were familiar with Lean construction compared to 71% today.  As shown in the following chart, this report also found that contractors with high Lean familiarity are more likely to recognize the important connection between supervisor and foreman leadership skills and enhanced safety.
